 {y}^{2}  - 4y + 2y - 8 = 0

(y + 2)(y - 4)

therefore,

y + 2 = 0   \:  \:  \:  \: and \:  \:  \:  \: y - 4 = 0

y =  - 2 \:  \:  \: and \:  \:  \: y = 4
