Let the present ages of Manish and Savita be m and s respectively

So,

m + s = 31....(1)

And

m - 3 = 4(s - 3)

m - 3 = 4s - 12

m - 4s = -9....(2)

Solving (1) and (2) we get

5s = 40

s = 8

m = 23

Therefore, Manish and Savita are 23 and 8 yrs old respectively.

then,

present age =

manish age = 4x+3

savitha age = x+3

sum of their present ages is 31

4x+x+3+3 = 31

5x+6 = 31

5x = 25

x = 25/5

x = 5

then,

manish age = 4x+3
                      = 4(5)+3
                     = 23

savitha age = x+3
                     = 5+3
                     = 8
