=> a = 4

=> b = 12

=> c be the third proportional

condition :-

a : b = b : c

4 : 12 = 12 : c

4c = 12 × 12

4c = 144

c = 144/4

c =36

The given question is we have to find the third proportional to the rupees 4 and 12.

The solution to this problem is obtained by assuming a=4 and b= 12.

let c be the required third proportional.

As we know that the third proportional of two numbers such as a and b is found to be.

a:b:: b:c

substitute the known values in the above ratio, we get the values as

4:12::12:c

where c is the unknown value, which is called a third variable.

The ratio can also be written as

 \frac{4}{12}  =  \frac{12}{c}

On cross multiplying the above fractions we get the value as

c  \times 4 = 12 \times 12 \\ 4c = 144

4 multiplying on the left side divides the number on the right side

c =  \frac{144}{4}

The value of c is obtained as 36.

Therefore, the final answer to the given question I.e., the third proportional is 36.
