Question :

Find two numbers such that one exceeds the other by 11 and their sum is 73 .

Answer : 42,31 .

Solution:

Let the smaller number be x .

Then, the greater number be x+11.

Sum of both numbers is 73

So, (x + 11) + x = 73

\longrightarrow 2x + 11 = 73

\longrightarrow 2x = 73 - 11

\longrightarrow 2x = 62

\longrightarrow x = 62 /2

\longrightarrow x = 31 .

\longrightarrow Hence, the smaller number = x = 31.

And the greater number is = 11 +x = 11 + 31 = 42.

Verification of the required answer :

One exceeds the other by 11 so their difference must be 11 .

\longrightarrow 42 - 31 = 11

Sum of both numbers must be 73.

\longrightarrow 42 +31 = 73.

Hence,the answer is verified.
