and second no. be y
• Sum of nos. is 56
x + y = 56
x = 56 - y ...... ( i )
• Product of the nos. is 783
xy = 783 ..... ( ii )
Putting value of x from ( i ) in ( ii )
xy = 783
( 56 - y )y = 783
56y - y² = 783
y² - 56y + 783 = 0
y² - 27y - 29y + 783 = 0
y ( y - 27 ) - 29 ( y - 27 ) = 0
( y - 27 ) ( y - 29 ) = 0
• ( y - 27 ) = 0
y = 27
• ( y - 29 ) = 0
y = 29
Putting value of y as 27 in ( i )
x = 56 - y
x = 56 - 27
x = 29
Putting value of y as 29 in ( ii )
x = 56 - y
x = 56 - 29
x = 27
So, the nos. are 26 and 27 !!
