Find two numbers with a sum of 20 and a difference of 14.

    The two numbers are 17 and 3

Step by step solution :

Let, the two numbers be x and y with x > y

Then, the sum of the numbers be (x + y)

and the difference be (x - y)

By the given conditions,

  x + y = 20 ...(i)

  x - y = 14 ...(ii)

Adding (i) and (ii), we get

  x + y + x - y = 20 + 14

  or, 2x = 34

  or, x = 17

Putting x = 17 in (i), we get

  17 + y = 20

  or, y = 20 - 17

  or, y = 3

So, the two numbers are 17 and 3

Verification :

    Sum = 17 + 3 = 20

    Difference = 17 - 3 = 14
