Given : 2x⁴-3x³-4x²+ax+b is divisible by x²+1

To Find : Values of a  and  b

Solution:

divisible by x²+1

=> x² = - 1

=> x = ± i

2x⁴-3x³-4x²+ax+b

x = i

=> 2(i)⁴ - 3(i)³-4(i)²+ai+b   = 0

=> 2 + 3i + 4 + ai + b = 0       (∵ i⁴ = 1 , i³ = -i  and i² = - 1)

=> (a + 3)i  + (b + 6) = 0

Equating real and imaginary parts

=> a =-3     b = - 6
