Find value of z in following reaction 1/2 Cl2 give rise to ClO- in x volt and which further give rise to ClO3- in y volt and whole equation in z volt

  1. As per the question the equation we can write for the first reaction is-(1/2)Cl2+H20+e- =ClO- +2H+ +2e-; for this reactionΔG=nFE=1FX[Xvolt is applied]
  2. now the second equation we can write is-                     ClO- +2H2O=ClO3- +4H+ +4e-;for this reactionΔG=nFE=4FY[Yvolt is applied]
  3. now we can get the total reaction by adding the two reactions above,                                            (1/2)Cl2+3H2O+e- =ClO3- +6H+  +6e-;for this reactionΔG=nFE=5FZ [Zvolt is applied]
  4. now the final reaction is sum of first two reaction,so we can write that-
  5. FX+4FY=5FZ       => Z= (X+4Y)/5
  6. so, the value  of Z is  (X+4Y)/5 .
