Find whether the given equation have x = 2, y = 1 as a solution:

2x – 3y = 1

Solution...✒

We have,

8x - ay + a² = 0.....(i)

It is given that x = 1 and y = 6 is a solution of the equation 8x - ay + a² = 0

We get,

8 (1) - a (6) + a² = 0

➞ 8 - 6a + a² = 0

➞ a² - 6a + 8 = 0

➞ a² - 4a - 2a + 8 = 0

➞ a(a - 4) - 2(a - 4) = 0

➞ (a - 4)(a - 2) = 0

➞ a - 4 = 0 or, a - 2 = 0

➞ a = 4 or, a = 2

Hence, a = 4 or, a = 2.
