5x+y=7
3x-4y=18

Given :

5x + y = 7 --- (1)

3x - 4y = 18 ----(2)

Multiply equation (1) by 4 so as to eliminate y

20x + 4y = 28

3x - 4y = 18

------------------

23x = 46

x = 46/23 = 2

Substitute x in any of the equations to get y

y = 7 - 10

y = -3
