Equality of Two Complex Numbers

Answer: Required value of x = 2 and y = -3.

Explanation:

given that

2 - iy = x + 3i

Two complex number a + ib and c + id are equal only when a = c and b = d.

In above case a = 2 , b = -y , c = 1 and d = 3

so if  2 - iy = x + 3i

⇒ 2 = x and - y = 3

⇒ x = 2 and y = -3

So the concept we have used here is two complex number are equal only when their real parts are equal and imaginary parts are equal.

Hence required value of x = 2 and y = -3.
