In the first Triangle you can see easily that:

x + 50° + 90° = 180° (Angle sum property of a triangle)

x + 140° = 180°

x = 180° - 140°

x = 40°

In the second triangle we can see that:

180° - 90° = 90° (Linear pair angle)

90° + 30° + y = 180°

y = 180° - 120°

y = 60°

x = 40°
