2x - (4 - x) = 5 - x

Remove bracket (remember to take care of the negative sign)

2x - 4 + x = 5 - x

Combine like terms:

3x - 4 = 5 - x

Add x to both sides:

4x -4 = 5

Add 4 to both sides:

4x = 9

Divide both sides by 4:

x = 9/4

Answer: x = 9/4
