FINDING PRIME FACTORS
The factor tree method is not suitable for large numbers. It is more convenient to find prime
first we shall try whether 2 is a factor of the given number and repeat division by it, if necesse
division method. We divide successively by the prime numbers in ascending order 2,3,5,7,11,
often as possible, until the dividend is no more divisible by 2. Then we pass on to 3 and find
is a factor of the given number or not. Then 5, then 7, and so on.
It follows from the above property
as the product of prime factors,

Ex. 6. Find the prime factors of
64
Sol. (i) 64 = 2 x 32
= 2 x 2 x 16
= 2 * 2 * 2 * 8
= 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 x 4
= 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2

The working is usually set out in the shortened form as shown:
64 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 2
The process stops when the final quotient is 1.
