Solution :-

Let, the y-axis divides the given line segment joining the points A(4, -7) and B(-2, -3) in the ratio m : 1

So,

Any point on y-axis is (0, y₁)

Using section formula for internal division:-

Any point P(x₁, y₁) divides the line joining points A(a₁, a₂) and B(b₁, b₂) internally in the ratio m : n, then,

n, then, x₁ = mb + na and y₁ = mb + na

m + n m + n

So,

Here applying the same formula, we get

0 = (m)(-2) + (1)(4) => m = 2

m + 1

Hence, we get m = 2

So, ratio of division = 2 : 1
