This is an old-fashioned book on an old-fashioned subject using an old-fashioned approach and succeeding in a brilliant modern way. The book consists of 184 magnificent, large, full-page line drawings of whole cell fine structure, each accompanied by opposite full-page, clear cytologic structural descriptions plus established functional correlations.

Although, it is true that in some ways, good actual electron micrographs will always be superior to anatomical diagrams, it often is difficult to illustrate all of one cell's important subcellular structures in a single, thin-section micrograph. Thus, to be illustratively thorough, there is still a need for drawings.

This atlas serves its stated purpose of displaying the fine structure cytology of nearly all mammalian cell types in a beautiful and impressive manner. As such, it should serve as a valued reference text to students, scholars, and investigators of all ages with a need for knowledge of cell fine structure.
