Answer:

Panic gripped the busy Athgaon area on Thursday morning when a massive fire raged for more than two hours at a spice godown located at Haldigali. Though there was no loss of life, locals complained of breathing problems because of smoke from the burnt spices. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in the godown.

Smoke from the fire was visible from a long distance and most of the building was gutted. Locals alleged that the godown was an illegal establishment, one of many such establishments in the area. The godown reportedly lacked fire preventive measures as well.

ADVERTISEMENTAs the inferno spread, fire tender vehicles struggled to reach the building as the paths leading up to it were too narrow. A firefighting official said, “Though at least 11 vehicles reached the area, only three of them could reach the closest spot to the godown. The area is so congested that the other fire tender vehicles had to wait for their turn one by one. It took a lot of effort and time to douse the fire.”

The fire was doused before it could spread to nearby buildings, one of which was a maternity hospital. “The fire has polluted the air in the area, which raises concerns for infants and pregnant women who are admitted nearby,” said Bikash Parakh, a local.

ADVERTISEMENTSeveral locals also blamed the district authorities for allowing illegal godowns in the area.

A similar incident had happened in November when a devastating fire had engulfed several houses in the city’s Tokobari area, after which the state’s fire & emergency services department asked the district administration to form a joint team combining the fire department, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the district administration to assess vulnerable areas in the city and to do the needful.

As per Assam State Fire Service Organization, the numbers of fire incidents to which the fire services have responded has swelled from 2,168 in 2010 to 3,420 in 2016.
