Evolutionarily, all organism arised from a first single cell.

So, common ancestor of birds and reptiles is Archeopteryx.

Soon Archeopteryx undergone variations side by side to seprate in to aves and reptiles.

So here egg laying habit devoloped with their ancestor Archepteryx. Soon it passed through several stages like early bird, partially early bird, quarterly bird and pro fully bird and then fully bird.

During this process there existed birds with all different combinations of characters of bird. So neither hen nor egg until you clearly can draw the line where hen was exactly hen and egg is xactly hens egg.
