Ans 1-Causes of US involvement in the war in Vietnam Spread of communism in Vietnam was the major cause for US involvement in war against Vietnam. Humiliation faced by the French in the hands of Vietnamese. NLF (National Liberation Front) efforts to unite North and South Vietnam.

Effect of US involvement on life with in US itself had suffered a huge loss of men and money.

The war grew out fear among the US policy planner that the victory of Ho-Chi-Mmh Government would start a demined effect. Nearly 47224 American solider were died in battle field and 303734 were found of the total wounder 23104 were 100% disabled.

Ans 2-Religion played an important role in the strengthening of colonial rule and development of aniticolonial feeling and uniting vietnamese against colonial control.

Vietnam's religious beliefs were a mixure of Buddhism, Confucianism and local practices.

Religion formed an integral part of the social and cultural life of the Vietnamese people.

Introducing Christianity was intolerant of the easy going attitude and Vietnamese reverence of the supernatural. Through Christianity the French tried to exercise control over the religious life of the Vietnamese.

This brought the Vietnamese into conflict with the French. Though the French were succesful in crushing the Scholars Revolt, the Hoa Hao Movement became popular. Through this movement Huynh Phu So tried to address many social evils but the French declared him madand exiled him to Laos.

Though the popular struggles put down by the French they served as inspiration for the patriots.

The following were the causes of the US involvement in the war in Vietnam:

(i) The US policy planners got afraid of the victory of the Ho Chi Minh government. They formed an opinion that this government would start a domino effect, i.e. Communist governments would be established in other countries in the area. The US could not tolerate the spread of Communism and decided to intervene decisively

(ii)France had to face great humiliation in Vietnam. America, therefore, wanted to crush this country forever in order to save the prestige of the capitalist countries like France.

(iii)America did not want the unification of Vietnam and South Vietnam gladdened America. But when the heads of the two parts (North Vietnam and South Vietnam) tried to unify them the US could not tolerate It sent troops and arms in Vietnam to crush its power.

But US entry into the war proved costly to the Vietnamese as well as the

Americans.
