The first successful pollen culture was done by Guha and Maheshwari in 1964.

  • Pollen culture can also be referred as microspore culture.
  • It can be defined as a technique in which haploid plants are obtained from isolated pollen grains.
  • In this culture, the immature pollen is used as the explant to get the haploid plants directly.
  • For this purpose, the flower buds are collected, surface sterilized and then the anther lobes are dissected out from the flower buds.
  • With the use of pollen culture, the sequence of androgenesis can be observed starting from a single cell.
