let us assume that the present number of males and females in the town be 'x' number of females be 'y' respectively ..

therefore according to the given data

= x + y=50000

= y =50000 - x --------(1)

according to question if the number of males increases by 9% a number of female is reduced by 20% the population within 52000

therefore..

x + 9% of x and y- 20% of y =52,000

= x + 0.09x + y - 0.2y = 52,000

=1.09x +0.8y =52,000

now put value from equation (1)

=1.09x +0.8(50000 - x) =52000

=1.09x + 40000-0.8x =52,000

=1.09x - 0.8x =52,000 - 40000

= 0.29x = 12000

Thus x =12000 /0.29

= 12000/0.3

=40000

from equation (1)

y =50000 - 40000

thus y =10000

= therefore the number of males is equals to 40000 and number of females is equals to 10000..
