Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian woman to go to space.
- She was born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, East Punjab, India. She was an engineer and an astronaut.
- Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of India to go to space. She first flew as a mission specialist on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997.
- She died on 1st February 2003 at the age of 40 in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
- Kalpana Chawla was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
