Scales are the exoskeleton located outside a fish body. Scales are hard, transparent and sharp structures which protect fish from predators. Scales also help the fish by getting damaged by corals. These are too slippery as the epidermal cells present under the scales secrete mucous which comes out and forms a covering on the scales. Most of the fish have scales. Only few species do not possess it instead they have a thick covering of mucous on their body as a protection.

Answer:

Scales-Against predators, they serve as the initial line of defence. They can fend off their predators thanks to this. They aid in hiding from view. Fish swim with less water resistance because of their hydrodynamic advantage.

Fish scales-Fishes with robust, stiff armour plates, like shrimpfish and boxfish, and fish with miniscule or nonexistent scales, like eels and anglerfish, have scales that vary greatly in size, form, structure, and extent. You can determine the species of fish from which a scale comes by looking at its morphology. The jawless ostracoderms, the progenitors of today's jawed fishes, are where scales first appeared. The majority of bony fishes have cycloid, ctenoid, or ganoid scales, which are found on salmon, carp, perch, sturgeons, and gars respectively.
