Fishes die in water bodies in case of abundance of phytoplankton,  eventhough  phytoplankton releases oxygen during day time as they undergoes photosynthesis, which may be used up by fish for their respiration process , while during night time the opposite of it happen and the phytoplaanktons may absorb the dissolved oxygen in the water bodies and releases carbondioxide , which reduces  the amount of oxygen in the water bodies , which makes the life of the fish difficult, even when they are present in abundance they may be crowded and some of the phytoplanktons may not receive proper  sunlight and can't perform photosynthesis as a result they may die off which lead to bacterial decomposition on phytoplankton and may deprive the oxygen,  which makes life easier for phytoplankton.

The abundance of planktonic algae within a pond is generally present in water with many nutrients. The Phytoplankton populations can rapidly grow in sunny days with more warm water which is available for nutrients. So for the fishes, there will be a chance to die quick off.

The Phytoplankton or bloom will occur at any time in the year with a little warming and especially in spring waterfall temperature. The abundance of water visibility of 12 inches with water when phytoplankton  becomes dangerous to oxygen depletion
