Green plants produce oxygen which is necessary for organisms to survive. fishes use the oxygen dissolved in the water to survive. if there r no plants in the aquarium then there will be no oxygen in the water and the fishes cannot breath and they die.

In the aquarium fish need plants for cover. They like to have different hiding places to hide when they get spooked. If they do not have enough hiding places they will hide in one corner and may die of disease brought about by stress.

Some fish need plants to survive. They eat the algae that grows on plants. So if their diet is not supplemented by plants they may die in a tank which does not have green plants.
