It is possible for aquatic animals to remain alive even though rivers and lakes freeze in winter because not the whole water bodies freezes. In cold countries the temperature of the water body decreases as a result of which ice is formed at the top . However water at the bottom does not freeze.Underneath the frozen upper layer, the water remains in its liquid form and does not freeze. Also, oxygen is trapped beneath the layer of ice. As a result, fish and other aquatic animals find it possible to live comfortably in the frozen lakes and ponds.
