Even when the temperature falls to below 0 degree Celsius, water below the ice remains at 4 degree Celsius. Thus temperature of water in contact with ice is at 0 degree Celsius, while the temperature of water layers below the ice gradually increases to 4 degree Celsius. As a result, fish and other aquatic creatures remain alive in water of the pond though the temperature is below o degree Celsius.

the reason for this is that there is constant heat transfer from high to low .now when the temperature in the surrounding is zero°c the temperature inside the water water would not
be absolute zero thus leading to heat transfer from higher to lower potential.
