The most productive fishing grounds lie in the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. Marine fisheries in Sri Lanka fall into three groups; coastal/inshore fishery, offshore fishery and deep sea fishery within 25 miles from shore. About 95% of the current fish production comes from the coastal/inshore fishery.
