Answer:

I can see how 21 would be considered an answer, but I don’t really see how 20 could be correct.

apple = 7

grape = 5+apple

grape = 5+7

grape = 12

3banana+1 = apple

6+1 = 7

1banana = 2 or 1 (depends on how you look at the problem)

1banana = 3banana/3 . . . 6/3=2

OR 1banana = 1

The two methods I used to arrive at 21 vs 20 is:

To find 1banana I first divided the value of 3banana by 3, this equals 2

6/3 = 2

The second method I used to find 1 banana is to assume 1banana actually represents 1, as in 1 banana.

This second method of finding the value of 1banana is a faulty, but is the only way I could see to logically solve the math problem if the answer is 21. The issue I have with this is that in my mind you can’t just assume that 1 banana equals 1 jsut becasue there is a single banana. If that was the case then the value of 1 apple would also be 1, but we know that is not the case because the information provided states that 1 apple represents the value 7.

Below is my solving for 1banana if the answer to grape+apple+single banana = 20

12+7+? = 20

? = 20–12–7

? = 8–7

? = 1

To close, I really don’t see how 20 could be the solution to this problem, to me the mental steps needed to reach the answer seem illogical and not contradictory. But, I suppose that there is another solution or piece of logic that I failed to recognize. I will now go read the other posted solutions to see what others have made of this post.

I now see that I had to count the grapes as well, tricky. I did’t even think of doing that. ;P It was pretty hard to count the grapes, partly because of the low res picture (I had to zoom in pretty far so I could more easily count each grape.).

With this new information the math equation would look like this for the final line.

apple+11grapes+1banana=?

apple = 7

12grapes=12

1grape=12/12=1

3bananas = 6

1banana=2

7+11+2=20

There we go, the correct answer!
