1. Nij cultivation was the first method that the British used to obtain and sell indigo(which was high in demand in England in those times because of it's rich colour)
2. It was not as successful or as moneymaking as ryoti system.

3.British needed indigo so that they can get more money by paying less to indian farmers.
4. by this the land lost its fertility due to another crops were grown.
