Ellora Caves, Ellora also spelled Elura, a series of 34 magnificent rock-cut temples in northwest-central Maharashtra state, western India. They are located near the village of Ellora, 19 miles (30 km) northwest of Aurangabad and 50 miles (80 km) southwest of the Ajanta Caves.It was carved out laboriously by Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monks over five centuries. The caves are famous for their sculptures strewn over all the 34 (12 Buddhist, 17 Hindu and 5 Jain) different caves temples.It was built by the Rashtrkuta king, Krishna I. Situated in the south of the precinct, these caves are estimated to have been built during 600 to 730 CE.
