5 pens and 6 pencils together cost rupees 9 and 3 pens and 2 pencil cost rupees 5 find the cost of one pen and one pencil ?

Solution:-

Given:- a) 5 pens and 6 pencils together cost rupees 9.

b) 3 pens and 2 pencil cost rupees 5.

Find:- The cost of one pen and one pencil ?

So Now,

Let, pen be x and pencil be y

Hence, { From given ( a ) & ( b ) }

=> 5x + 6y = 9 .......... ( 1 )

=> 3x + 2y = 5 .......... ( 2 )

To find cost of pen

multiply eq. ( 2 ) by 3

=> 9x + 6y = 15 ......... ( 3 )

Subtract eq. ( 3 ) from eq. ( 1 )

5x + 6y = 9

- ( 9x + 6y = 15 )

- 4x = - 6

4x = 6

x = 6/4

x = 3/2

x = 1.5 or {cost of pen rupees 1.5}

To find cost of pencil

now put value of x in eq. ( 1 )

=> 5x + 6y = 9

=> 5 ( 1.5 ) + 6y = 9

=> 7.5 + 6y = 9

=> 6y = 9 - 7.5

=> 6y = 1.5

=> y = 1.5/6

=> y = 0.25 or{cost of pencil rupees 0.25}

Hence cost of one pen and one pencil are rupees 1.5 & rupees

0.25 respectively
