Land degradation happens due to the following reasons:

1. Deforestation is one of the main reasons for land degradation since, the roots of the trees hold on to the soil, and when trees are cut down the soil becomes loose, increasing chances of land slides.

2. Overgrazing is another reason. People graze their cattle in a specific region which removes the grass cover and the soil becomes loose, since wpeven grass is helpful in holding on to soil.

3. Land degradation can also happen due to mining and industrial effluents. Mining leaves deep scars on the surface of the earth, causing degradation. Now in the cement making industry, limestone powder gets discharged into the air which comes down with rain water and seeps into the soil, making it unfit for growth of plants.

Ways of preventing:

1. Afforestation

2. Proper discharge of the industrial effluents

3. Proper rules regarding grazing.
