A snake belongs to the class of vertebrates called Reptilia. They are exothermic organisms, which means that their body temperatures are controlled by their environment. They are usually oviparous or egg-laying, however some snakes are ovoviviparous, e.g. puff adder. Snakes are legless organism but some species have retained a pelvic girdle. Snakes are thought to have evolved from lizards in the Jurassic period.
