Given :  5 small buckets and 2 large bucket of water make 20 litres,

2 small buckets and 3 large bucket make only 19 litres.

To Find:  how much water can each bucket hold?

Solution:

Assume that small bucket can hold water = x  liter

Assume that large bucket can hold water = y  liter

5 small buckets and 2 large bucket of water make 20 litres,

=> 5x + 2y = 20    Eq1

2 small buckets and 3 large bucket make only 19 litres.

=> 2x  + 3y  = 19   Eq2

3Eq1  - 2 * Eq2

=> 15x  - 4x  = 60  - 38

=> 11x = 22

=>  x= 2

Substitute in Eq1

5(2) + 2y = 20

=> y = 5

Small bucket can hold water = 2  liter

large bucket can hold water = 5  liter
