The stratified squamous epithelium has the following properties :-

1. In this the innermost cells are cuboidal and columnar type.

2. The outermost cells appears like flattened or scale like structure.

3. The middle layer is formed of polygonal cells.

4. They are very rigid and cells provide mechanical support and it is the main function of this.

5. It is also called as Germinativum layer.
