Given :- five squares are positioned as shown. The small square indicated has area as 1.What is the value of h? a) 3. b) 3.5. c) 4. d) 4.2. e) 4.5 .

Answer :-

→ Area of small square = 1 unit²

→ (side)² = 1

so,

→ side of small square = 1 unit .

now, Let us assume that,

  • side of square above shaded square = x unit .

then, we have,

  • side of square on left of shaded square = (x + 1) unit .
  • and, side of square down to square on left of shaded square = (x + 1) + 1 = (x + 2) unit .
  • finally, side of largest square = (x + 2) + 1 = (x + 3) unit .

as we can see that,

→ (x - 1) + h = side of largest square

→ x - 1 + h = (x + 3)

→ h = 3 + 1

→ h = 4 units (Ans.)
