Let the number be x
Five times a number = 5x
Exceeds 12 by 3 = 12+3

Now,

5x = 12 + 3
5x = 15
x = 15/5
x= 3

Thus, the number is 3

Let the no. be X
Then as per given condition
5X -3 = 12
5x = 12+3
5x = 15
X = 15/5
X = 3
