Let the no. be x
so,
   5x=12+3
   5x=15
   x=15/5
   x=3

So we read the question properly then it clearly says 
five times a no. which means 5x
exceeds 12 by 3 which means 12+3

so 5x = 12+3

5x = 15

x =15/ 5 = 3
