Every persons harbors a set of core beliefs and ideals that
drives him and make him what he is. Paying conscious attention to these beliefs
and ideals is very important as these beliefs gathered over the time becomes
values and totally affect a person life
Mahatma Gandhi has also said,
“Your beliefs become your
thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.” So the values one holds becomes one destiny. Generally people acquire their values and value system from the response they gather from their environment. So it becomes important to consciously examine what values one is getting from the environment as one’s complete life depends on it.
So the five values I hold in high esteem are Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Acceptance, Fervency and Humility.
Integrity: Why integrity is an important attribute that one should cultivate. Integrity is like a stem of a tree that provides firm support and grounding for different situations in life. Without Integrity, a person life is like broken leaf, wherever the winds blow it, it just goes there. So Integrity is getting the base setup from where the journey of self-development can start. When a person has integrity in his/her life other people also start trusting and respecting the person.
Perseverance: Another important value to harbor is Perseverance. Taking the metaphor of tree again. A tree cannot grow if the person who has planted it doesn’t have perseverance. It can take months and years sometimes to reach to the desired vision. A little progress each day and consciously sticking to one’s act of endeavor is necessary. As Samuel Jackson says ‘Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance” One cannot achieve anything great when one is just fickle minded, changing one’s path and direction.
Self-Acceptance Practicing constant Self-Acceptance helps to rekindle one’s inner light. There will be instances when one may not regard oneself in high self-esteem, when external situations would demonstrate incompetency. Accepting oneself is also necessary as it helps to avoid a life that is fake. When one accepts one-self, one is considering that he/she is the most important person whose opinion matters. He also understands that it is futile to live from the eyes of world.
Fervency Call it passion, call it enthusiasm but the main point this value refers is giving the best to the task at hand. Doing anything with lukewarmness and half-heartedly is not going to help
.
Last but not the least, another important value to live by is
Humility: Humility is important because it means one is open, one is accepting. Being humble opens the door for self-improvement. The deeper the roots of a tree are grounded, the higher it goes in sky. Being humble grounds oneself.
A person living by these values can not only transform his own life but the lives of person he comes in contact with.
