five year ago amita was thrice as old as her brother now the diffrence of their ages is 16. find their present age?

let amita's age be X and her brother age be y

ATQ:

Five years ago

(x-5) =3(y-5)

x-5=3y -15

x-3y=-10 [let it be equation (1)]

NOW:

x-y=16 [let it be equation (2)]

putting eq 1 and 2

x-3y=-10

x-y=16

solving this by elimination method (u can use your own method aim is to solve)

2y=26

y=13

putting y value in eq 1

x-3y=-10

X= -10 +3y

X =-10+3*13

X= -10+39

X=29

hence Amita age is 29 years

and her brothers age is 13 years
