Five years ago, let father's age be 5x

and let Rahul's age be x

At the present, sum of their ages = 40

→ 5x + 5 + x + 5 = 40 years

→ 6x + 10 = 40

→ 6x = 40 - 10

→ 6x = 30

→ x = 5

Therefore Rahul's age = 5 years

And father's age = 40 - 5 = 35 years
