Five years ago, let father's age be 5x

and let Rahul's age be x

At the present, sum of their ages = 40

→ 5x + 5 + x + 5 = 40 years

→ 6x + 10 = 40

→ 6x = 40 - 10

→ 6x = 30

→ x = 5

Therefore Rahul's age = 5 years

And father's age = 40 - 5 = 35 years

Given:

Five year ago Rahul father was five times Rahul's age . Sum of Rahul and his father's age is 40 years.

To find:

Present age of Rahul and his father.

Solution:

Let the present of Rahul be x and his father's be y.

∴ Five year ago Rahul father was five times Rahul's age at present

∴ (y-5) = 5(x-5)

∴ 5x - y = 20 ....1

Sum of Rahul and his father's age is 40 years.

∴ x + y = 40 ....2

Solving 1 & 2, we get

x =  10 & y = 30

Thus present age of Rahul and his father are 10 years and 30 years respectively.
