SOLUTION:-

Given:

Five years hence, the age of jacob be three times that of his son. Jacob age was 7 times that of his son.

To find:

The present ages.

Explanation:

Let age of son = M years.

Let age of jacob= R years.

According to the question:

Five years hence,

Age of jacob is (R+5) years.

Age of son is (M+5) years

Therefore,

=) (R+5) = 3(M+5)

=) R +5 = 3M +15

=) R -3M = 15 -5

=) R -3M = 10

=) R= 10+ 3M............(1)

Five years ago,

=) (R -5) = 7(M-5)

=) (R -5)= 7M -35

=) 10 +3M -5 = 7M -35 [Using eq.(1)]

=) 3M +5 = 7M -35

=) 3M -7M= -35 -5

=) -4M = -40

=) M= -40/-4

=) M= 10 years

&

Putting the value of M in equation (1), we get;

=) R= 10 +3(10)

=) R= 10 + 30

=) R= 40 years

Hence,

•The son's age is 10 years

•The father's age is 40 years.

Thank you
