Step-by-step explanation:

present age of father be x

present age of son be y

five years ago father's age was = x - 5

five years ago son's age was = y - 5

father's age was 8 times the son's age

x - 5 = 8(y - 5)

x - 5 = 8y - 40

x - 8y = - 40 + 5

x - 8y = - 35 equ (1)

five years later father's age will be = x + 5

five years later son's age will be = y + 5

father's age will be 3 times the son's age

x + 5 = 3(y + 5)

x + 5 = 3y + 15

x - 3y = 15 - 5

x - 3y = 10. equ (2)

subtract (2) - (1)

(x - 3y) - (x - 8y) = 10 - (-35)

x - 3y - x + 8y = 10 + 35

5y = 45

y = 45/5

y = 9

substitute y = 9 in equ (2)

x - 3y = 10

x - 3(9) = 10

x - 27 = 10

x = 10 + 27

x = 37

father's age = 37 years

son's age = 9 years

hope you get your answer
