Five years ago, a mother was seven times as old as her daughter. five years hence, she will be three as old as her daughter. find their present ages.​

x - 5 = 7 ( y - 5 )

x - 5 = 7y - 35

x - 7y = -30 (1)

x + 5 = 3 ( y + 5 )

x + 5 = 3y + 15

x - 3y = 10 (2)

Subtracting (1) from (2),

x - 7y = -30

x - 3y = 10

y = 10 years

Putting y = 10 in (2),

x - 3*10 = 10

x = 10 + 30 = 40
