let
mother's age=m
daughter's age=d
five years ago
mother's age = m-5
daughter's age = d-5
mother was 2 times the age of daughter
2(d-5) = m-5
2d-10=m-5
m-2d+5=0

Let the age of mother be `x` yrs
And the age of daughter be `y` yrs
five years ago mother`s age = x-5 yrs
and daughter`s age = y-5
Given mother`s age 5 yrs ago was 2 times the daughter`s age
⇒x-5 = 2(y-5)
⇒x-5 = 2y -10
⇒x - 5 - 2y +10 = 0
⇒x - 2y + 5 = 0
∴x - 2y + 5 = 0  is the required linear equation.
