Five years ago, Ajay was thrice as old as Sonu. Ten years later, Ajay will be twice as old as Sonu. How old are Ajay and Sonu? Solve it by graphical method.

Let Ajay's age be x and the age of Sonu be y

From the question,

1. (x-5) = 3(y-5)

x-5 = 3y-15

3y-x = 10 (1)

2. (x+10) =2 (y+10)

x+10 = 2y +20

2y-x = -10 (2)

Subtract (2) from (1) [ Since the coefficients of x are the same, the equations do not need to be modified)

3y - x = 10

- 2y - x = -10

minus minus is plus

Thus, 3y-2y = 10+10

y=20

20×2 - x =-10

40-x = -10

x= 50

Thus, Ajay is 50 yrs old and Sonu is 20 yrs old

Five years ago

Age of Ajay =x–5years

Age of Sony =y–5years

Ajay was thrice as old as Sonu

X−5=3(y–5)

X–5=35–15

X–3y=−15+5

Ten years later,

Age of ajay =x+10

Age of Sonu =y+10

Ajay will be twice as old as Sonu.

X+10=2(y+10)

X+10=2y+20

X–2y=10 ………..(2)

X–3y=−10 ………..(1)

Subtracting equation (1) from equation (2) we get

Y=20

Plug this value in equation first we get

X−3∗20=−10

X=60–10

X=50

Hence age of ajay =50 years and age of Sonu =20 years
