Five years ago I was three times as old as my daughter and then 10 years later I will be twice as old as my daughter. Find my present age and my daughter's present age.

Answer:

The present age of daughter = 20 years

                       My present age = 50 years

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the Present age of my daughter = x

                                My present age = y

Five years ago,

                 Age of my daughter = x-5

                                      My age = y-5

Ten years later,

                Age of my daughter = x+10

                                     My age = y+10

Given condition,

Five years ago I was three times as old as my daughter

  Mathematically it can be written as

             y-5 = 3(x-5)

             y-5 = 3x-15

                y = 3x-15+5

                y = 3x-10     ----------------------(i)

 Ten years later I will be twice as old as my daughter

    Mathematically it can be written as

               y+10 = 2(x+10)

                     y = 2x+20-10

                     y = 2x+10  ----------------(ii)

       from (i) and (ii)

            3x-10 = 2x+10

              3x-2x=10+10

                   x = 20

    Now substitute the value of x = 20 in equation(i)

            y = 3(20)-10

            y = 50

          Hence,

   The present age of daughter x = 20years

                         My present age y = 50years
