Answer :

The required equation is 2x - 5y + 1 = 0

Step-by-step explanation :

Given :

  • Five years ago, Ravi was three times older than Ram
  • Three years later, his age will be 1 year less than twice of Ram's age.

To find :

form equation

Solution :

Let the present age of Ravi be x years

and present age of Ram be y years

Five years ago,

Ravi's age = (x - 5) years

Ram's age = (y - 5) years

Ravi was 3 times older than Ram.

x - 5 = 3(y - 5)

x - 5 = 3y - 15

3y - x = 15 - 5

3y - x = 10 --[1]

Ten years later,

Ravi's age = (x + 10) years

Ram's age = (y + 10) years

Ravi's age will be 1 year less than twice of Ram.

 x + 10 = 2(y + 10) - 1

 x + 10 = 2y + 20 - 1

 x + 10 = 2y + 19

 2y - x = 10 - 19

 2y - x = -9 --[2]

Add equations [1] and [2],

3y - x + 2y - x = 10 - 9

5y - 2x = 1

2x - 5y + 1 = 0

The required equation is 2x - 5y + 1 = 0
